Isle of Palm Activities
There’s a lot to do here in Isle of Palms! Of course, the main focus for most activities is the ocean. You can spend all your time out basking in the sun on a colorful beach blanket (with plenty of sunscreen of course) as reading the latest thriller or just people watching. Stroll along the surf searching for that perfect souvenir shell or sand dollar or spend the day splashing around in the waves with kids.
Book a fishing charter and go on a day-long hunt for a trophy king mackerel or tuna, or book a less stressful charter where you can catch a few redfish or trout for dinner. Walk down to the local marina, rent a boat and have your own fishing adventure, or just cruise around exploring and sightseeing. Bring your own kayak (or rent one) and take a guided tour of the barrier islands. Or take it easy and just fish from the pier or the surf right in front of Isle of Palms Sea Cabins. Get to the beach early, stake out your rod, then settle back to watch the sun rise and wait for the fish to bite. There’s a community grill too, so you can grill out, then dine on your catch of the day.
Plan a day trip to Charleston. There’s so much to see in this historic city! Founded in 1670, the city was the first official capital of the state and became a major port for the slave trade in the 18th century. Charleston at one time was the wealthiest city in the colonies, and today is a leader in cutting edge culinary arts and farm-to-table cuisine. The famous Spoleto Festival USA is held here every spring, and honestly, there’s usually a festival or event of some sort going on every weekend. You can spend days wandering through the city’s historic district visiting “Rainbow Row,” the Battery, Old Slave Mart, Drayton Hall, and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. And at night, check out the best Charleston nightlife destinations all around the city.
History buffs will find that there are plenty of historic homes and plantations around Charleston to visit too. Located in nearby Mount Pleasant, Boone Hall Plantation is certainly worth a visit. This historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the country’s oldest plantations still in operation. The plantation historic district includes a 1936 Greek Revival home, brick slave cabins along Slave Street from 1790-1810, and a beautiful allée of live oaks from the 1700s. While you’re in Mount Pleasant, take the kids to Splash Island Waterpark and Palmetto Islands County Park where you can hike along nature trails and boardwalks, rent a bike, kayak, or pedal boat, or climb the observation tower for an amazing view of the coastline.
Make a day of visiting the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historic Park. Fort Moultrie, originally built of palmetto logs and sand on Sullivan’s Island, was built in 1776 to protect Charleston and the South Carolina coastline. Use of the local palmetto logs for a fort may seem strange, but evidently the soft logs absorbed the bombardment, and the fort was a part of the nation’s coastal defenses until the 1960s. A half-hour ferry ride, leaving from Fort Moultrie, takes you out to Fort Sumter in the harbor. In April of 1861, the pentagonal-shaped fort was still under construction when the Confederates bombarded it, starting the Battle of Fort Sumter and the Civil War. And, while you’re on Sullivan’s Island, take time to visit the iconic Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, also known as the Carolina Lighthouse. This quirky, triangularly shaped tower, painted black and white, is a local landmark.
