South Carolina boasts beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures for most of the year. The crashing waves of the Atlantic will have you pointing your compass toward the state and the city of Isle of Palms for a relaxing getaway this summer or fall in Isle of Palms. There are plenty of things to do in Isle of Palms, no matter when you come or how long you stay!

Water Activities

The city of Isle of Palms is located on a barrier island on the South Carolina coast, meaning there are plenty of opportunities for time in the sun and water. In the summer, back up the beach gear and head to the shore for swimming, boating activities like wakeboarding or tubing, and more. In the fall, stroll on the beach as the waves crash at your feet. No matter the season, stretch out under a beach umbrella with a good book and snacks and while away the day.

July 4th Fireworks

When the temperatures rise and the waters of the Atlantic warm, patriotism is on the rise with them. The Isle of Palms, along with nearby Sullivan’s Island and Patriots Point hold awe-inspiring and patriotic fireworks displays that celebrate our country’s independence.

Moja Arts Festival

Head into Charleston in the fall and celebrate the arts at the annual MOJA Arts Festival. It’s a celebration of African-American and Caribbean Arts, and is known as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 events! There is always something new to see, and nearly half of the festival’s events – from theater and dance performances to live music and visual art displays – are admission-free or low cost, ranging from $5-$35 per person.

Holiday Festival of Lights

Kick-off the holiday season early, as nearby Charleston presents its Holiday Festival of Lights. Wander through over two million lights in 600 light displays, as well as a train ride to the sand sculpture, a carousel in an enchanted forest, and more. The festival is open for viewing from mid-November until December 31.

Bike Rentals

While you can drive into surrounding Charleston, North Charleston, and Summerville – or even further afield, you’ll want to explore every nook and cranny of the island. That’s not always easy, as your rental car can’t reach everywhere on the 4.4-square-mile piece of land. Leave the rental car for that trip into the city and rent a bicycle for a different view of the island, and some exercise, as you explore. Summer or fall, you’ll have access to much more when you can go places your car can’t.

Spa Day

Experience total vacation relaxation at a local spa. There are a few right on Isle of Palms, and several more in the surrounding metro area. Enjoy treatments like facials, mani-pedis, body wraps, and more so you can head home completely relaxed and rejuvenated.

Halloween Carnival

Join in this fall at the annual Halloween carnival and costume contest. It’s held at the rec center on 28th Avenue and features games, bounce houses, face painting, candy, prizes, and more. The fun typically takes place in the early evening hours of Halloween.

Surfing & Paddleboarding

The crashing waves of the Atlantic and the beautiful weather of South Carolina make it the perfect environment to learn to surf. The water will be a bit warmer in the summer months, so you might want to save your lesson until then. Saltmarsh Surf Co. offers surfing lessons from a certified surf instructor. You’ll learn the basics of surfing and ocean safety in lessons geared toward those who have never surfed before. If the high-adrenaline experience of surfing isn’t your thing, they also offer two-hour stand-up paddleboarding eco-tours. Owner Philip Antman is a Charleston native and marine biologist, and he’ll lead you on a tour of the local waterways, pointing out various local flora and fauna and filling you in on fun facts about the Salt Marsh ecosystem.
