South Carolina boasts beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures most of the year, along with sand, sun, and fun. There are a variety of fun, budget-friendly, things to do and interesting places to see to keep everyone happy and busy enjoying vacation.

Beaches

An escape to a beach location like Isle of Palms, no matter the time of year or what your budget may be, means whiling away the hours and days on the beach. Sunbathe, take a walk, build sandcastles with the kids, or plant a beach umbrella and enjoy a picnic or a good book.

When the water’s warm, take a dip in the Atlantic for activities like swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA, and other adventurous activities like parasailing, wakeboarding, and more that will have your adrenaline pumping.

Biking

There are some places around town that larger vehicles like rental cars and our special beach carts can’t fit. Rent a bike and take a tour of the area you’ve decided to call home for a while, get some exercise at the same time, and negotiate those tighter passages for a complete Isle of Palms experience.

There are a number of companies that offer rentals to suit your group’s needs, schedule, and budget. Choose from adult bikes, children’s bikes, and accessories including child seats or trailers. Rentals include helmets, but you’ll want to ask about other safety gear and accessories like lights, extra baskets, and whatever else is on your bike at home.

Isle of Palms Recreation Department

There are a variety of things to do that won’t break the bank. Enjoy outdoor activities in the fields, and kids will love the park playground. Activities include disc golf, tennis, softball, basketball, and more. Work up a sweat indoors at the gym. If you brought your furry family members on your vacation, their Bark Park is a large fenced-in area where they can roam and interact with other dogs.

Shelling

While you might consider any beach activity something for the warmer months, that’s not the case in Isle of Palms. Beachcombing and shelling brings unique finds you may not see the rest of the year. Seasonal storms dislodge and kick up more unique shells to wash them ashore.

Make your way to the beach just after one of these storms to find specimens that may not wash up in a typical tide change. Another optimum time is the hours following low tide.

Fishing

Coastal towns like Isle of Palms are all about the water. If you or any of your traveling companions are anglers, get in on the many fun water and beach activities, while also taking some time out to cast a line.

While taking an all-inclusive charter trip may net you amazing catches, plotting your own adventure can save you money. There are inland locations where you can cast a line, or fish from the edge of the surf. Keep in mind charter trips also provide all the gear, bait, and tackle you’ll need, but you’ll have to organize and pay for those items yourself if you strike out on your own.

No matter how you catch your next big fish story, you’ll need to secure the proper South Carolina fishing license before heading out.

Shopping & Dining

Set a budget and shop ‘til you drop. The many activities and attractions you’ll experience during your vacation can net you some awesome souvenirs. But you may want to hit the local shops for some truly unique Isle of Palms pieces. No matter what your budget, you’ll find something to remember your trip.

While you can save money by creating delicious meals right at your rental, you’ll want to sample the flavors of Isle of Palms. There are a number of local restaurants, cafes, and eateries ready to serve you breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Enjoy fresh seafood caught from the waters of the Atlantic, as well as Italian, Mexican, and Caribbean flavors.

Wildlife Spotting

You don’t need to board an expensive charter vessel to spot local wildlife. Take a walk along the beach and spot critters including crabs or look out to see to spot dolphins and more. If your walk takes you to inland water sources, don’t be surprised to see a turtle or alligator nearby. Everyone – people and animals – can stay safe as long as you give the creatures plenty of space and only watch from afar.
